our girlie getaway

The girls and I spent the weekend in Victoria .. a bigger city just south of us, and also our provinces capital. We spent two glorious days and one night doing only what we wanted to. It was a nice little getaway at the end of our summer and before school starts. First we drove straight to Beacon Hill Park where we walked along the paths and took in the intoxicating smells of the flowers. Lured a chipmunk only inches from Hailey's hands and the ducks and seagulls sat by closely as we ate our picnic lunch .. begging for scraps that we couldn't ignore. Then we went over to the petting farm and Hailey found her goat namesake. :) Spelled the same way even!

After finding parking down by the seawall, we walked along and enjoyed all the goings on that are really for the tourists, but we were that for a day, right? The buskers putting on shows, the local artists displaying their goods, just lots of stuff happening, and lots of things to see.

We always love to admire the Parliament Building and The Empress Hotel too while along that stretch. They're big and impressive and really the Gov't Building makes for an amazing photo shoot, and one day I WILL take advantage of that.

After dinner we went and found our hotel and enjoyed the pool. The girls enjoyed it far longer then I did, but it tired them out nicely so they slept.

And then after a leisure beginning to our day, we went for breakfast and then shopping. We hit up two malls but most of that was just window shopping. We came home with the girls getting each a new pair of shoes, socks and they spent their own money on toys. It was two full and fun days and I think that between this mini trip and all the beach days, the girls can go back to school knowing they had a pretty fun summer. Even if Mommy went back to work and it wasn't as much time spent together .. we made it work for us.

to-do's

I had yesterday off work but it was a day packed with lots of little things I needed to get done. One being hitting up the hardware store for those screen thingamajigs. Both screens are reinstalled now! yay! We also wanted to return books to the public library and get some new ones. Hailey picked Host by Stephenie Meyer, which is one I've been wanting to read as well, so we're going to read it at the same time, if I can ever get my ass off Entourage.
We're going away for the weekend, so I needed to make sure all fluids in my car were topped up and that my tires held the proper amount of air. And guess what? I did all the checking! Pretty good hey for a girl that a couple years ago didn't even know how to check the oil.

And then the girls had eye appts. I usually like to have them checked every year but I've been pretty bad the past few years so this one was much needed. I decided to switch them from their previous optometrist (which used to be mine as well), to the one I switched to when I went to contacts. He's thorough, not so intimidating for kids, and the ladies working there are really nice too. He did the entire workup on them right down to pupil dilation and examining afterwards. It worked out that Hailey's eyes are as perfect as they should be. No signs of diabetes (always something I worry about) or anything else unhealthy and her vision is perfect. Alissa checked out fine too in the eye health area but her vision is slightly near sighted. Nothing serious, just something they'll keep a look out for as she gets her annual checks and of course if she complains of headaches or dizziness then it's progressed but so far she hasn't ever, so it must just be slight.

Afterwards we met up with friends at a park for a play, and then had a taco dinner together. It was a good, packed day that left us three very tired and ready for bed early.

Awhile ago we had a very blustery couple days .. so much so that you could hear the winds whipping around the corners of the house, howling and making all sorts of noise. The wind shook the windows but the only distruction I noticed were two window screens came loose and fell to the ground. I inserted them back into their little sill holders, but a couple had broken and the wind whipped them out yet again. Obviously those sorts of high winds don't last that long, but I just kept the screens of those two windows (hailey's and my bedrooms) down to eliminate the problem until I could fix it. This 'chore' went on the back burner but after having a horrible dream last night, I will get to the local hardware store and buy some new little holder thingies. Good luck to me trying to describe what exactly I'm looking for to the person that helps me hey?

I've noticed that even with my blinds and curtains closed, Meesha (our 14 yr old man of the house) likes to scoot himself behind the curtain and blind and sit on the window ledge. Because it's summer, I have the window open as wide as it will go. He's a cat. Cat's have great balance, right? Even from the second floor?

That was not the case in my dream .. or maybe I'll just call it a nightmare. :( I woke myself up crying actually. Not the tears, just the sobs. In my nightmare, I dreamt he had lost his balance and fell. I ran through the house, down the stairs, out the front door to check on him and he layed there in a mass of black fur against the pavement. Somehow in my dream, a ambulance was called and they pronounced him dead due to the fall. Just before I woke myself up, I was holding him and crying. I already know I have weird dreams. I haven't had one in awhile, or one I've remembered upon waking anyway .. but this one is going to set me into action.

Home Hardware, here I come!

PS .. the first thing I did after realizing it was a dream, was call my kitty up to my bed (from wherever he was downstairs), and snuggled him tightly.

Alissa lost her 11th tooth last week but saved it until the other night to tuck it under her pillow for the Tooth Fairy to pay a visit, take the tooth and leave her some coins. The Tooth Fairy nearly forgot, but when packing up lunches the following morning, suddenly she remembered and snuck back upstairs, tiptoed into Alissa's room and very carefully squeezed her hand between the pillow and the bed to feel for the little baggie the tooth was in. It took a lot of feeling, stopping to let what looked like a disturbed Alissa settle into her slumber, feeling around again and then finding the prize. Then the trick was to get the money under there without it making any noise. And since this all was happening about an hour before she would have woken on her own, who knew what stage of sleep she was truly in. The Tooth Fairy was sure pushing her luck!

So yesterday Alissa out of the blue tells me that Hailey (who has lost all twenty of her teeth and only has her wisdoms (when they grow in) to be pulled) told her the Tooth Fairy is really me. Now I've had words with Hailey concerning things such as this. She cannot spoil this for her sister no matter what she herself has found out. And now I'm learning she's squealed on me! :( Not fair! You're only a kid once and I think you should be able to believe in what they can and will, right? Right! And I won't go into details about how my parents never led my siblings and I to believe in anything fantasy and this is the reason I'm obsessed with doing so with my own kids. So I asked Alissa if she believed and she said yes, but she wanted to know why I thought was the reason and she dismissed that part of the conversation quite easily, but then said that when she's lost all her teeth it would be nice if she could have them all back so she could look at them. Weird kid!

As with the Santa thing .. we'll see how much longer all this will continue to play out.

trailer trash ;)

Last night us gals partied in my friends RV. Sounds like we're the female version of the trailer park boys hey? But we were classy! We talked to loud, we sang off key, we took photos with friends.

We did jello shooters .. weak ones, but they were good and fuuuuuun to try and get out of the glasses! ;)

SOME of us showed off underwear she got the night before at an Aaron Prichett concert at our town's local exhibition. She wasn't drunk enough or brave enough to show them ON her rear, but this was good enough. Any more explicity would warrant her husband to come out and check on us and we couldn't have that!

We drank even more, we gossiped, we tried walking around in the uneven RV that made one feel more drunk then we were, we (or rather, THEY) burped like trashy white girls (I can't burp and certainly not on wine), and we had fun. And then one by one we called it a night and left .. but my friend Darla .. that girl can party long into the wee hours of the morning. She just doesn't show her age (aside from the yawning from 9pm on).

Maybe we were a little like the trailer park boys .. but partying in an RV is fun! Next time we're taking it outside of her backyard to avoid unwanted interruptions.

It's August and been pretty damn hot lately so you can imagine that there's not a chance I'm going to enjoy getting my nose anywhere near my 11 and 9 yr olds when they've played hard all day.

Heat + children = sticky smelly mess .

There are times when I do like to smell my children tho. Right after a shower when they're squeeky clean and donne the odour of yummy garnier shampoo (mango flavour) and dove (the only soap used in this house). Mmm. Or when they've put on a fresh set of clothes that still smells of fresh laundry, aka downy (april fresh to be precise). Mmm.

But tonight I realized that there is one more smell I enjoy. We spent the evening at the beach, soaking in the evening sun, the cool breeze off the ocean and after climbing back into the car when it was time to leave, I realized that the salt in the air made for salty smelling children and it smelled good. Almost earthy. I breathed it in for the ten minute drive home , letting the salt tickle my nostrils and the freshness linger. And then that was enough for me. I ushered the girls up the stairs for a shower so I could then breathe in their mango, dove goodness clothed in freshly laundered downy smelling pajamas. Mmm!

I am not planning on having any more children. Let me repeat that. I am NOT going to have any more children no matter how damn cute I know they are and future ones would be. I couldn't help but play around with this morphing site and got a glimpse of how freaky looking they think my offspring with J could be. At least they got the cute little nose right. :P

But I do want to say again so none of you get any ideas. No more kids. You hear that?
But my ovaries do ache seeing this cute freaky baby. *sigh*

floor art

I have a couple vases grouped along with my set of wooden shoes alongside the entertainment unit, but I need a nice tall, coloured one to go with them. I love this one .. wish I could find one like it somewhere local. Maybe Home Sense has something similar, but not quite that tall .. half would do.

five addictions

1. Mmm .. this is going on every sandwich and wrap I make. So perfect for a little added flavour to a simple summer sandwich.

2. the perfect amount of filling to get me through to lunch time. I love raisins in my granola!!

3. Entourage. From Gossip Girl to Criminal Minds to now Entourage .. my addiction of watching season after season of specific shows continues. I'm liking the laid back, natural, and human feel to this one. This could be any group of guys in pretty much any town. It has the perfect amount of humour too!

4. with the recent heatwave and the need to keep the windows closed during the day to keep the cool air in, this scent keeps the house from smelling stale. It truly does smell fresh and clean in here!!

5. this dress site has me drooling!! I would love love love to get my hands on one or two of them, and I'm not even really a dress kinda person anymore. The accessories and bags are very cool too!

I was reading through my list of updated blogs this morning and came across a very interesting find on one.
Karen Oleary .. artist and designer .. has made maps a new and most talked about center piece of artwork to display in your home. In fact I love it so much I may consider purchasing something along those lines at some time in the future.
Here's Paris .. can you imagine driving streets that resemble a spiders web?

And then Melbourne. At least it's somewhat gridded.

And Amsterdam .. which is layed out according to the canals and waterways.

Amsterdam's reminds me quite abit of my city's downtown core. We're known as the 'hub city' and there's a reason for it.

It's 'must have' day again. Today I bring you the amazing tasting chocolate milk again, but this time, mix it with a cup of steeped tea and the combined flavour is surprisingly very very tasty. You can order this yourself. Ask for whatever size steeped tea you'd like, and instead of saying milk or cream, ask for chocolate milk. A customer brought this special concoction to my attention and until I tasted it, I seriously thought he had just lost his marbles. I was forced to apologize the next time I saw him. It's yummy!

When I stumble across THE perfect moment and THE perfect idea and get home and find out I am totally in love with the photos .. oh sweet bliss!! I love these photos so much they're going into the frames I have up on the wall behind the couch. I can't wait to play with this idea more, when we stumble upon the perfect lighting again. :)

love affair

I wouldn't classify myself as an outdoorsy person. Yes I like parts of the outdoors, but not everything. There used to be a time I'd willingly give up my comfy bed located in my bedroom with a bathroom (running water/hot water/flush toilet) very near by for an air matress in a tent, in the middle of the dark woods with only an outhouse a football feild length away. Yeah no .. that's so not me anymore. But when it comes to taking a couple hours on a wonderful sunny day/evening to enjoy the surroundings I'm lucky to leave in .. well THAT I can do!

So on that walk we took the other day .. the girls found lots to occupy themselves with.

Alissa found a jelly fish (she's good at finding things to torture .. if you had a conversation with our cat Meesha, oh the stories he could tell) to poke and prod. It was dead already, and such a weird texture.

Hailey found a log or fifty that she could balance along. Actually we all balanced along them, from one to the other until we had managed to get down the entire beach without our feet touching the pebbles.

Then the part where the cliffs became part of the trail started. Of course we ventured off to parts unknown (and far to dangerous for my liking and I can't even blame it on me being a girl .. the girls are girls too!).

And then while the girls played along some other formation of rocks, I planted myself down and did some investigating of my own. I found some shells that with a little manipulating created the letter J. Hmmm .. wonder who was on my mind. ;)

This part of the outdoors I can handle. It's fun and not so much work that the work outdoes the fun of it. And I can go home and sleep in my own bed, in the bedroom that is located right beside the bathroom that has hotwater and a flushable toilet. I'm a snob!

Yesterday turned nice after an overcast/muggy/rainy start so after dinner I decided the girls and I should get out into it and enjoy the evening sunshine. I wanted them to run off some energy and they always so enjoy exploring the cliffs/beaches/and ocean side so much. that that's where we headed .. for one of our favourite nature parks where you get so much packed into one little place. The tide was up and still coming in more, so it brought in alot of little treasures .. one being the bull whips. Bullwhip Kelp are the seaweed that are long, thick but hollow on the inside with this bulb at the one end that is also hollow.
Stories say the natives used to dry them, fill them with items that would rattle and actually use these in real life situations.

Hailey wanted to show me for the umpteenth time how you break a bullwhip bulb open .. so let her demonstrate for you.

#1 .. select the perfect bulb from the layers and layers of seaweed lining the beach.

#2 dig your thumb nail into the side to break through the exterior. She warns that it may feel a little .. uhhh disgusting.

#3 get your second thumb in there with the first and tear it apart. There's nothing to be afraid of because it's hollow .. nothing lives in there, nothing has lived in there, and nothing will ever live in there .. now.

See? that's why it would be kinda neat to see how it would dry up and transform into a rattle. But I'm never going to suggest the idea or I may be conned into helping out with the experiment and as far as I'm concerned, these things stay at the beach and don't come anywhere close to my house. Thankyouverymuch!

what's for dinner?

Every couple weeks I like to make up a stir fry with whatever veggies I happen to have in the fridge at the time. Today's was very simple. Podded peas, cauliflower, carrots and red bell peppers.

I sauteed them to perfection with some tender stewing meat. And then I added just the right ingredient to kick it up a notch. What is that perfect ingredient you ask?

None other then a Thai Sweet Chili Sauce! Mmm Mmm. It gave it a nice sweet/spicy flavour.

Mr. Rain!

Rain, I'm so loving you right now. I haven't seen you in so long, and to have you on a weekend day that I wanted to spend at home anyway, leaves me feeling no guilt whatsoever. However, I do need to go out for some groceries, and a few household things at Walmart, but otherwise it's going to be a day filled with Criminal Minds (on season 5), movies, naps, snacking, some basic house chores, laundry and just being one big lazy bum! :)

I was getting bored with my look, so am in the middle of changing it so please just bear with me for a few days while I settle on how I want things to look. :)

alone

This is something I'm learning to enjoy. Because I haven't had much alone time in the last 11 years, when my girls leave every other weekend, I usually fill my weekends with friends, phone calls, boyfriend time, shopping, etc etc. I can deal with a couple hours of just me and then I'm feeling bored or antsy and need to talk to someone.
There's several things in this video/poem that I've never done before. Gone out for a fancy meal all by myself, watched a movie at the theater by my lonesome, went dancing at a club all by myself, etc. I think I may have to put some of these things on my life list because it sounds very liberating.
I truly enjoyed this poem so much I thought I'd share it here with you all. Take a look .. it's food for thought.

horton hottie's must-haves

Since working at Timmies, I (or coworkers) have come up with some interesting drinks. Ones that are not on the menu and we're not supposed to sell (even to friends), but do on occasion. But some of them are easy enough to replicate at home so I thought I'd make a small series of 'must haves' and share them here for the remainder of the summer.First up is an iced coffee. We sell ice lattes and ice cappuccinos but not this. Take any cup or glass, fill about a third way with coffee. If you've already let the coffee cool from this morning, even better .. if not, then add ice cubes. Let the coffee cool and add more cubes if you like that. You may need some sweetener, in which case it's easier added when the coffee is hot so it melts, or honey works too. Fill the rest of the glass with chocolate milk, and enjoy. Savour the flavour because it really is so rich and delicious! The chocolate milk gives it a different flavour then what hot chocolate would added to coffee for mocha. It's yummy!!!!

My baby sister's birthday is today .. she's 35!! I feel like I'm still that age .. let alone her turning it! *sigh*

I think we're two completely different types of people. I always saw myself as a pretty dominant personality .. one that could stick up for myself, voice my opinions, carry my side of a conversation, etc etc. We may have complete different outlooks on life, have come from two complete different backgrounds, but something drew us to become friends. I've realized there's a reason and a season for friendships so this is why I question things now. Around you I feel blown over and as much as I have tried to hold my own, I realized just the other day that you truly don't listen to me and my opinions. You ask me what I think and then in the next breath say "well I think we should ____." Or you lay out your worries and concerns and then ask me what's new with my life and suddenly shut down. I literally can see your eyes glass over! I'm not saying we need to reciprocate with sharing. Whatever. I have other people I confide in so I'm certainly not lacking in the shoulder/listening ear/advice. I just don't think I can hold up to your aggressive personality. I don't see it as a good fit, and I always feel so depleted and exhausted after we've spent time together. The dynamics are certainly different within a group because I then see how your personality changes and you become the aggressee instead .. almost like you're intimidated, but in a one on one situation you really are the strong dominant one.
I realize we all have our own desires and goals for the future, and I can surely understand how as friends even if our outlooks differ, we can still be supportive of the others decisions, but to always feel like I have to defend what I want for my future is a very daunting and tiring chore. I know you've been hurt and don't want to chance going through the same thing again, but I've been hurt too and I don't think you can judge all books by the cover. Not everyone is going to treat you the way you were treated. You so hate when women are all categorized in one way, so why would you do that to all men? If I want to be in love, share my life with an amazing man, and possibly one day be open enough to remarry and enjoy life in a partnership again, why is that so wrong? It just means I want happiness and I'd like to example for my daughters that some things don't always work out, but we can succeed again if we just keep trying. And in my opinion, you're showing your children that men can't be trusted, and you can only count on women. You've proven it by surrounding yourself with none other then women. Your doctor, lawyer, teachers, friends, EVERYONE is a woman! I'm all about "I am woman, hear me roar" but enough already!
Obviously you'll never see this letter because you're not a reader of my blog, but I do plan on making my concerns known to you in person. And I am in no way saying I am blameless and perfect. God knows I have my share of faults too. I just can't continue on without saying something. I hope you can understand!

Since the heat of the summer hit, I've been bringing home a cold tea from work instead of something hot. This hot drink originally substituted my late afternoon/after dinner coffee, but today I felt like having that coffee fix. And oh how tantalizing it did taste. Mmm!

f.u.n.n.y!

Last night I was snuggling on my bed with my littlest, watching Diary of a Wimpy Kid while the oldest entertained a friend for the night. It was nice to be able to just lay there all comfy like (aside from the heat, but the fan was blasting) and spend some time with just my wee one. She gets attention, don't get me wrong .. but it's usually of the negative variety because she's, well, she's the quirky, strong willed, tease, brat kinda child.
Anyway, to get to the point of this post. There was this REALLY funny part in the movie that had me laughing and laughing. I couldn't just cut the part I wanted to share with you, out of the movie trailer on youtube, so you'll have to either watch it all or skip ahead to 1.17mins to see it. Of course in the movie you get to actually SEE the hairy mole, but you get the gist of how funny this was, I hope. And the added part is that I'm not a fan of redheads .. and this redhead with braces, scrawny body, funny voice ... well it all worked in to a f.u.n.n.y scene.
