Alissa brought this book home from the school library, yesterday .. and although I've discovered I'm not much of a Robert Munsch fan, I figured I'd be the good Mommy that I proclaim and strive to be, and read it at bedtime.
I apologize to all Robert Munsch fans out there, but if you've never read this book, you may not fully understand what my next statement means, but it's just not right.
What kind of child's book has the teacher and student standing in their undergarments as the end result to the teacher trying desperately to get the little guy into his snowsuit and they get into a rumble and discover their clothes and the dreaded snowsuit laying in a pile on the floor. And while standing in their undergarments, in walks the principal .. and he tries to help get Thomas into his snowsuit and ends up in the teacher's dress and she in his suit. It's messed up, I tell you!
A couple years ago, Hailey brought home another R. Munsch book (can't remember the title, might be A Promise is a Promise) about a little boy living in the Yukon I believe. I had to stop reading the story outloud (to a 4 and 6yr old) because of some horrible picture and questionable story. Hailey had dreams that woke her all frightened, for a few nights .. and that's when I approached her teacher. She agreed she'd flip through the books before letting the children check them out.
For a children's author, I think Robert Munsch tends to take things just a little to far for young, impressionable minds.
And that, my friends, is my personal point of view on this Thursday morning.

I get it.....it's important to know what books you read to your girls and what they read to themselves. Way to go!

I have to agree RM's work is patchy. He's got some serious good'uns out there but you have to wade through quite a lot of er.... weird stuff to find them. His content is definitely different, and I'd say an acquired taste -- His writing did not appeal to me at all. But then I found him on audio tape, and later a video, and I can really appreciate how animated he is. He's a big kid. There's not enough of that out there, especially in North America where humor is so dry. Living downunder, children's idols, authors, teachers, etc. had a much more lively, animated approach to teaching and entertaining children.
We seemed to have lost that gift in the Northern Hemisphere. Or at least in Western Canada.
Some of RM's stuff has borderlined inappropriate for me at times, too though.
Not to worry, there are SO many great authors out there!!! And thanks for the book review, you've done well :))))
